Principal’s Report
Our most recent professional day has focused on deepening our understanding of Oracy, which is the ability to express oneself effectively through spoken language. As a result of this work, we are exploring whole school expectations regarding developing and embedding strategies across our school. We will continue to update you on our progress, and in the meantime, we seek your support in building upon this work at home. Over the remainder of 2023, we encourage all caregivers to explore the following strategies:
- Ask open-ended questions that require more than a simple "yes" or "no" response, encouraging your child to elaborate and share their opinions.
- Monitor screen time and encourage face-to-face interactions. Excessive screen time can hinder verbal communication development.
We intend to hold a caregiver information session in term four, and we would welcome your input regarding possible times and dates to maximise the engagement of our community in this essential work.
Term three reports will be posted home early next week, with downloads available on the Daymap portal on Wednesday, 27 September. These 'long' reports will provide comments and detailed information on your child's progress, their performance based on national standards, and where to next in each subject area. They represent an excellent opportunity to practice oracy skills with questions around progress and creating future goals. If you have any concerns about the report, please do not hesitate to contact the teacher directly or the secondary/primary coordinator to discuss the issue.
Finally, we have experienced high absenteeism rates over the past fortnight, with many learners and staff succumbing to illnesses and infections that have created a perfect storm. Our top priority is the health and safety of our school community, and we appreciate your cooperation in keeping unwell learners home and your patience regarding the disruption to learning programs.

Student Wellbeing Support

Hi, I am Hayley, and I am a Student Wellbeing Officer from Uniting Country SA assigned to work at Quorn Area School. My role as a student wellbeing officer is working with the school leaders and wellbeing staff to create a school environment that promotes the wellbeing of all students and helps them with coping strategies in situations in their everyday lives. I am hoping I can help with my role in supporting and guiding the students with the situations they face in their schooling and everyday life. I currently attend Peterborough High School on Mondays and Tuesdays and attend Quorn Area School every Friday. I am available for one-to-one sessions, in-class and group sessions.
For those of you who do not know me, I am a mother of 3 energetic boys; I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Psychology and a Certificate 3 in Fitness. I am fascinated with the mind and why people act, think, and do what they do. Overall, mental and physical health, developmental theories and growth are extremely important to me personally and professionally.
If you ever feel you need some support, please feel welcome to introduce yourself or drop into the wellbeing room on Fridays to chat 😊. Thank you for having me a part of the school – I hope to see you around 😊
Kind regards
Hayley Duncan

Primary Report
Miss Neu’s F/1 Class
This term, we have been very busy on a few different projects, from designing Farms of the future and learning about different cultures to changing our mindsets around maths through inquiry tasks that allow us to think flexibly about numbers. Check out our video.
Our focus this term was on Design and Technology. We designed sock puppets for our upcoming health lesson on how to talk about feelings and friendship. As part of the design process, we came up with our success criteria together before drawing and making. They turned out amazing. We will be putting them on display at the Quorn Show.

News from the F/1 Class with Miss Victoria
This term, the F/1 class has been working especially hard to get involved in all the different areas of learning that have occurred on top of the regular school day. They have explored Science Week, Book Week, and NAIDOC Week and got involved in Sports Day.
In Science Week, we investigated physical sciences by collaborating to determine what objects would float or sink. The learners explored these terms using different items and testing their density in a water bowl. This lesson was especially exciting as we could use the new outdoor nature space to support our learning. We discussed how leaves would float in the water we pumped from the tap.

Across the term, we have participated in Exploratory activities to engage in different learning styles. Through this learning, we have had to be Inquiry Ivy’s and Adaptable Ash’s to work together, ask questions, and problem-solve. We have used interactive tools with the iPads to engage with coding and maths, used paints to explore identity and numeracy, and examined procedure text by creating recipes for icy poles.

This term, the F/1 class has also focused on soccer to understand and celebrate the Women’s World Cup. We have discussed the importance of resilience and dedication for athletes and have shown our skills in these qualities as we learned how to use a soccer ball and work as a team.
In Numeracy this term, the learners have shown great perseverance by engaging with many concepts. We have explored odd and even, symmetry, doubles, place value, money, and even touched on multiplication. Alongside these concepts, the learners have continued to develop their confidence in using numbers to investigate subtraction and addition within increasing two-digit numbers.

Our Year 5 student Flynn Saxton recently spent 3 days competing at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Flynn is a member of Ignite Cheer and Dance. He attended the All Things Cheer and Dance Showdown. Well done, Flynn.

Lawn Bowls Sessions
Over the past three weeks, the secondary Health and PE classes have participated in some lawn bowls sessions facilitated by Brett Herbert - Club Support Manager, SA, Bowls Australia.
All learners have really enjoyed participating in the sessions and have had the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge. A huge thanks to Brett and the wonderful volunteers at the Quorn Bowling Club for their time and patience with us.
It is a wonderful thing to be able to encourage school/community connections. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful facility here in Quorn to utilise.
